One of the most famous and romantic Roman sites captured on a beautiful summer day. This majestic fountain attracts thousands of tourists and locals daily. My girlfriend and I performed the traditional “make a wish” act, throwing a coin with your right hand over your left shoulder, thus ensuring a return trip back to Rome...as the legend tells it.

As a history MA, I was entirely in my element on this beautiful September day in the middle of the Roman ruins of Palatine Hill. I stood there and thought to myself: 2,000 years ago people walked on these paths, looked at these trees and lived their everyday lives among this beauty. And here it still stands.

The hike up is tiring but 100% worth it as you will be rewarded with an amazing panoramic view of Vatican City below, stretching into Rome itself. This shot looks down on St. Peter’s Square that hours earlier had been completely filled for the Pope’s weekly address on Wednesdays.

Magic! End of the afternoon in mid-September, the Colosseum appears as if from another time…

While visiting friends in Rome in June 2010, they took us to Tuscany for a weekend stay at an “agriturismo.” We toured the area and discovered many old towns located in walled, castle-like groupings. This is a view from our bedroom window at the inn, a vineyard operated by a friendly elderly gentleman and his son.

To be in St. Peter’s Square when the Pope addresses the assembled crowd is truly remarkable.

This is Tavolara Island, home to exotic mountain goats and birds. We rounded this rugged limestone outcropping while on an eco-expedition with the Bottlenose Dolphin Research Institute, which offers both credit courses and volunteer service opportunities around the Aranci Gulf.

During one of our many adventures in Rome, we stumbled upon the “People’s Square” or Piazza del Popolo. Standing in the centre of square we captured an image of the “twin” churches of Santa Maria di Montesanto (left, built 1662–75) and Santa Maria dei Miracoli (right, built 1675–79).
