The Eternal City

Savour the simple delight of a perfect pizza straight out of the oven, or join the stylish Roman crowd at a café. Refresh yourself with a lemon gelato. See the Trevi Fountain, Vatican City, the Appian Way, and the Colosseum. The grandeur of Rome is almost unbelievable, and yet it’s real, a flesh and blood city with rounded, curvy statuary, busy boulevards and shady back alleys, a storied city bursting with life in all its transcendent, sensual glory.

Rome’s bustling port is the departure point for many cruises that travel to such historic ports of call as Rhodes, Istanbul, Ephesus, Tunis or Capri. We cannot think of a more pleasant way to discover the treasures of antiquity!

Fattoria Il Colombaio (agriturismo) Inn

Auteur: John Charles

While visiting friends in Rome in June 2010, they took us to Tuscany for a weekend stay at an “agriturismo.” We toured the area and discovered many old towns located in walled, castle-like groupings. This is a view from our bedroom window at the inn, a vineyard operated by a friendly elderly gentleman and his son.

Seascape, Sardinia

Auteur: Linda

This is Tavolara Island, home to exotic mountain goats and birds. We rounded this rugged limestone outcropping while on an eco-expedition with the Bottlenose Dolphin Research Institute, which offers both credit courses and volunteer service opportunities around the Aranci Gulf.

The “twin churches” of Piazza del Popolo, Rome

Auteur: Derek

During one of our many adventures in Rome, we stumbled upon the “People’s Square” or Piazza del Popolo. Standing in the centre of square we captured an image of the “twin” churches of Santa Maria di Montesanto (left, built 1662–75) and Santa Maria dei Miracoli (right, built 1675–79).
