Rest break, Lisbon

Author: Lana

Taking a rest break in front of the Rua Augusta Arch on Praça do Comércio after wandering around the Alfama district for hours. People watching in other countries is great. As I sat there a procession of people in costumes with music arrived from somewhere, so I was not only looking at beautiful scenery, but also got to experience some live entertainment.

Castle of Obidos

Author: Debbie

Obidos is located less than an hour’s drive from Lisbon and is a beautiful ancient walled town, situated on a hilltop with a great view of the vineyards and surrounding farmland. The castle itself is accessible and well maintained. Very quaint, geared to tourism and generous in hospitality, it's a must-see in Portugal.

Vasco da Gama Bridge, Lisbon

Author: Jaqueline

Here is a bird’s eye view of the Vasco da Gama Bridge in Lisbon. It crosses the Tagus river and is 17.2 km long—making it the longest bridge in Europe and 9th longest in the world.

Stained glass in the Batalha Monastery

Author: Casaundra

This monastery was amazing for its architecture and the stained glass windows. These two in particular were in an octagonal room of the Founder's Chapel, where their light was shed on the joint tomb of King João I and his wife Philippa of Lancaster. The limestone architecture at the bottom of the picture, moving upward into the window space, is from the tombs of the sons of the royal couple.

Pena Palace, Sintra

Author: Brian

A visit to the quaint village of Sintra, just a 40-minute train ride west of Lisbon, is an absolute must. The village itself has numerous delightful old buildings as well as artwork along the winding streets. Pena Palace, located outside the village and accessed by a local bus, is a visual feast and a real treat to explore. Close by is the Moorish Castle, which, like Pena Palace, has superb views of the spectacular surrounding countryside.
