Amsterdam Overview

For many, the most beautiful city in Europe and maybe the world

Amsterdam, the cultural capital of the country, is the most frequently visited city in the Netherlands. One of Europe's greatest artistic cities and main tourist centres, Amsterdam is the capital of Holland. Each year, the city attracts almost two million visitors who long to admire its historical and cultural riches and enjoy its famous nightlife activities.

Built on a flatland created from the draining of marshes and sea, the city seems quite compact amidst its network of canals surrounding the Centraal Station (train station).

Amsterdam is an ideal destination for those who love to walk. Built on a flatland created from the draining of marshes and sea, the city seems quite compact amidst its network of canals surrounding the Centraal Station (train station). It is very easy to go from one attraction to another in random order since most tourist sites are located in the Centrum (downtown) area.

The train is the preferred means of transportation of travellers in Amsterdam. The nerve centre of the railway network in the city, and perhaps even in the entire country, is the magnificent Centraal Station, which was built in 1889 and stands in the lively Stationsplein. The station's northern exit will lead you directly to the seaside and offers a view of the port of Amsterdam, made famous by Jacques Brel.
