Cozumel Where on earth

The scuba-diver's paradise

Cozumel is the biggest island in Mexico, surrounded by turquoise waters and a spectacular string of coral reef. Since the release of a documentary film by marine explorer Jacques Cousteau in 1961, Cozumel has become a choice location and is visited by thousands of scuba divers every year.

Located 19 km from the coast in the Caribbean Sea, the island is flat, shaped like lobster claws and is about 48 km by 16 km in size. The centre of Cozumel is overgrown with vegetation. Its periphery, though, is a continuous ring of white sand and limestone. Since the east coast of the island is exposed to high winds, tourist establishments and hotels are situated on the west coast. San Miguel, the only city on the island, is also on the west side and has a population of about 65,000.
