Seaside resorts and fine-sand beaches

More than anywhere else in the country, the development of tourism in the region has been particularly intense over the last 20 years, and many of its towns and villages have become major resort areas. Following the example of Puerto Plata, Sosúa and Cabarete, the superb beaches further east, have now been developed in the region of Río San Juan and Playa Grande.

Puerto Plata

The city's beautiful location, nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and the Cordillera Septentrionale mountain range, adds to its allure. Despite the constant development in Puerto Plata, its downtown has remained largely unchanged, retaining its typical Caribbean flavour.

Playa Dorada

This is neither a village nor a town that became touristy, but rather a few square kilometres of buildings erected solely for tourism. It has about a dozen luxury hotels offering a wide range of services and activities.

Sosúa

With the exception of Puerto Plata, Sosúa has undergone more tourist development than any other area on the coast. Sosúa is a pleasant place to stay, due to its abundance of restaurants, hotels and outdoor activities. The jagged coastline makes for some beautiful landscapes, and the bay's waters are always crystal clear.

Cabarete

Cabarete is considered the windsurfing capital of the country, and with good reason. Its magnificent beach stretches nearly 3 km (2 mi), making it perfect for long walks. Cabarete's beach is large enough that you don't feel hemmed in on all sides by hotels and sunbathers. Cabarete has retained a pleasant, casual atmosphere and also offers a good selection of hotels, generally small or medium-sized, as well as several restaurants.

Playa Grande

Around 8 km (5 mi) from Río San Juan, lie the most spectacular beaches in the country. The Playa Grande is remarkable for the sheer length and width of its ribbon of fine sand, lined with coconut palms from one end to the other for some 2 km (1.2 mi).
