The San Andrés y Providencia Archipelago is picture-postcard material: lush, green scenery with white sandy beaches shaded by magnificent palm trees and a coral sea of translucent water the colour of emeralds.

The San Andrés y Providencia Archipelago is 700 km (435 mi) northwest of mainland Colombia; comprising a total of 44 km2 (17 sq mi) of land, the islands are spread out over 350,000 km2 (135,000 sq mi) of sea. San Andrés island covers 36 km2 (388 sq miles).
